Security+ is the most widely held entry-level security certification in the world: it proves you master the fundamentals (threats, architecture, operations, governance) and can apply them through hands-on, performance-based questions. It is required for many US Department of Defense roles and is increasingly recognised in France and Europe. Its strength is that recognition and a practical dimension rare at this level; its limit is that it remains a foundation, insufficient on its own for a senior role.
- Exam
- SY0-701 until 11 June 2027 (English), SY0-801 from 17 November 2026: up to 90 questions (multiple choice and performance-based) in 90 minutes, pass mark 750 on a 100-900 scale.
- Exam price
- $439US list price; €323 on CompTIA’s European store. Prices vary by country. Voucher with a retake (Retake Assurance): US$579.
- Required experience
- None required. CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years as a security or systems administrator (two years of hands-on security administration for SY0-801).
- Validity and maintenance
- Valid 3 years: 50 CEUs plus a US$150 continuing education fee per cycle, or pass the latest version or a higher CompTIA certification (no fee).
