Cybersecurity

cyber security · information security · IT security · infosec · cybersécurité

The technical, organisational and human measures that protect computer systems, data and people against attacks, mistakes and failures.

In practice

Cybersecurity is not just a matter of tools: it combines technology (updates, backups, multi-factor authentication), organisation (rules, procedures, clear responsibilities) and people (awareness). Its aim is to preserve the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information, in proportion to each organisation’s risks. For a small business the stakes are very concrete: one attack can halt production, expose customer data and put the directors’ own liability on the line.

Example

In 2025, France’s national victim support service, Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr, assisted more than 500,000 victims (individuals, businesses and local authorities), 20% more than in 2024; phishing remained the top threat. To guard against it, the French cybersecurity agency ANSSI publishes a hygiene guide of 42 basic measures that any organisation can apply.
