The GSE is GIAC’s highest distinction: it rewards a portfolio of ten GIAC certifications, four of them earned through fully hands-on exams in defence, forensics and penetration testing. Since its 2023 redesign, the old in-person lab has been replaced by these Applied Knowledge exams. Its strength is exceptional prestige among practitioners; its limit is the time and money involved, which only make sense with strong employer backing.
- Exam
- No single exam: a portfolio certification. You must hold six GIAC Practitioner certifications and four Applied Knowledge (GX) certifications, each GX exam being 4 h and fully hands-on (CyberLive).
- Exam price
- $1,299Price of one Applied Knowledge (GX) exam: US$499 if you already hold the related Practitioner certification. Four are needed, on top of six Practitioner exams at US$999.
- Required experience
- Hold six active GIAC Practitioner certifications and four Applied Knowledge certifications. Each GX exam is tied to a Practitioner certification (GSEC, GCIH, GPEN, GCIA, GCFA, GCFE).
- Validity and maintenance
- The six Practitioner and four Applied Knowledge certifications must remain active. Earning the GSE aligns all your active GIAC certifications on the GSE expiry date.
- Format
- Multiple choice and hands-on

Senior practitioners who already hold several GIAC certifications and want to crown a career spent between defence, incident response and offensive security.
